i swear this angel encapsulates everything so loathsome about the rebuilds. all the original angels can be reduced to a two or three-word diminutive, ie ‘screaming blue octahedron’, ‘penis monster’, ‘glowing rope’, ‘computer virus’ etc, which is really something remarkable at least from a conceptual design perspective. meanwhile this asshole is so frantically gratuitous IN FORM AND FUNCTION that it escapes adequate description. i couldn’t even begin to explain this angel if i tried. ‘stilt walking clockwork spider with pinpoint ice powers’ (feat. tiny sachiel head?) what’s worse, it took not even 35 seconds to defeat this thing, with a single roundhouse kick no less. sad!
I feel like it’s important to remember that besides things that are “bottom of the barrel” bad, that our thoughts on certain designs and shows are still subjective and everyone’s got weird guilty pleasures and biases that will trump “objective” analysis like composition and anatomy.
One of the reasons it’s pretty impossible to make a list of “best/worst” list for stuff like Pokemon is it’s SUPER based on taste. One of us likes bugs and another of us likes birds so it’s obvious we are gonna gravitate towards them compared to ones based of monkeys, regardless of design qualities.
Nostalgia also plays with your perception of design, and there are a lot of series we have a very keen knowledge of and can talk on for hours. Some things that get sent to us are things we don’t have a lick of knowledge on, and we will likely miss subtle things about a design or the context of their character that maybe you understand more then us.
If we hate something you like or vice versa that doesn’t mean you have shit tastes or one of us is necessarily “right”. It’s important to figure out why designs “work” and why some dont and part of that learning is figuring out what appeals to you.
